What should I look for when hiring a painting company?
Hiring someone you don’t know to come into your home and give you what should be a major investment can be extremely stressful.
Instead of saying “we are the best company, we use premium products”, we want to help you learn to make an educated decision on what works best for you. Whether we are the best fit or someone else is, you should feel comfortable in knowing that you picked confidently!
These are a couple of important questions we will answer, and can be used as a guideline to ask any company you’re looking to hire:
Does each estimate I’m receiving specify and guarantee how many coats of paint it is going to take?
We like to be as transparent as possible on our estimates ahead of time because hidden costs are never fun and not always affordable. Being upfront means you have the option ahead of time to change colours to find something that covers better if more than two coats is out of your budget.
What coatings are the companies using? On top of that, how long have they used them for and can they stand by their longevity? Why are they the best coatings? Are their pros and cons of either?
We have consistently used Benjamin Moore for our entire careers. While we have used other paints as well, we stand by the durability of Benjamin Moore paints based on consistent visits with previous clients, using the products in our own homes and the well established relationships we have with our suppliers. We are happy to talk you through any product we choose for your home
Are the line items of each estimate comparable? Has the cheaper estimate specified which rooms/closets/areas are included and excluded?
It’s important you know when you sign a contract exactly what it is you are signing. A contract should explicitly state what areas are getting painted and how.
What is the preparation process for your surfaces?
Painting is the smallest step when it comes to refreshing your walls. It is always necessary to sand every surface getting painted and make sure they are clear of any possible contamination. This should be included and clear in any estimate.
How will they protect your belongings?
Your belongings, furniture and surfaces should be protected from dust, paint and any other potential spills. We use a combination of plastic, spill protection floor paper, heavy duty carpet protection and drop sheets to insure your home is respected.
Can they show you a sample of what finish they will be providing?
Ask us about our sample boards! There’s no better way to know what you’re getting than seeing it ahead of time. We can provide you with sample boards of every finish we use, including cabinetry.
